Torre Linda - Towering magnificence with spectacular views in Montecito
The cypress lined 200-yard sweeping driveway leading up to Torre Linda is dotted with century-old oaks and a California citrus orchard. After passing through the sandstone columns & solid iron gates, you arrive at the crown of this 7-acre parcel. It is abundantly clear that the breathtaking coastal & mountain views are the reason the estate was placed on this very spot.
Rich in history, Torre Linda’s story begins in 1924. In that year, the well-known David Gray Sr., a philanthropist and builder, constructed the massive concrete water tower which predates the 1931 construction of the existing main house. The water tower was originally used as a reservoir serving Gray's nearby Graholm estate. Grayholm is presently the home of the world-renowned Brooks Institute of Photography. In 1931, the creation of the main house achieved a perfect blend of Monterey Colonial, Spanish Colonial Revival and early nineteenth-century Adobe architecture.
Today, Torre Linda, Spanish for "pretty tower", has been thoughtfully and carefully remodeled to maintain its historical status, while preserving the most spectacular ocean and mountain views in all of Montecito. The original 45-foot water tower itself has been transformed into a whimsical retreat that sleeps two guests, with 360 degree views.
Inside the home, European elegance with a warm comfortable style is everywhere. Vast collections of fine art, literature, and antique furniture make wandering from room-to-room an interesting journey.
The Sitting Room, adjacent to the grand Foyer, is the heart of the home. It offers a fireplace and comfortable seating for breakfast, or afternoon tea. Continue on to the bright country kitchen. This kitchen offers professional Viking appliances, glass-front cabinetry, natural granite surfaces, dual sinks and a massive center island.
The living room & dining room both surround a large semi-circular fireplace; which was custom designed for the unique architecture of the home. Enjoy coastal and poolside views from the South side of the room, and magnificent Santa Ynez mountain views from the North side. The formal dining table seats 10, and is conveniently placed as a sofa console table when not in use. The well-appointed wet bar and sound system add ambiance to this inviting space.
A sculpted walnut staircase leads to the elegant Master Suite. At the foot of the King-size bed, French doors open to a Monterey-style balcony with unobstructed City, Harbor, and Island views. The Master sitting area boasts a fireplace, and a flat screen television. The Master bath has exquisite marble surfaces, his and hers sinks, air-jet tub, walk-in shower with rain shower head, and bidet.
There are two guest bedrooms on the main level. The larger of the two is a generous size bedroom suite with fireplace, massive built-in book shelves, and sitting area. The second bedroom offers a King size bed, and ocean views.
Descend the marble stairs to the lower level to find a wonderful Family Room & Library with fireplace & leather couches. The unique curved perimeter of this “green room" echoes the circular water tower theme. It has an abundance of windows and bookshelves; stocked with quality literature. A twin bed with full bathroom, are provided as an additional sleeping option.
The spacious Guest House with King-size bed is a bright studio with plentiful windows to the views beyond. It offers a large stone fireplace, leather chairs, and flat screen television. There is a full bath with walk-in shower
With stunning views, the Lanai-style Pool House (with outdoor living room) sets the tone for year-round entertaining. Its kitchen is complete with dishwasher, full size refrigerator, microwave, and generous counter space. A pass-through window opens to the bar outside . It also has an exercise room with a treadmill and flat screen tv. The full bath has a unique open shower for convenience . This pool house is a fantastic amenity to the stunning indigo-colored pool nearby.
Completing the tour is the outdoor Pergola patio on the South side of the estate; which overlooks the pool area. This vine-covered circular oasis centers on a large round dining table which seats 10 comfortably. A large wood-burning outdoor fireplace, peaceful fountain, rose gardens, and lush landscape, combine to provide a serene background to every outdoor gathering.
